What the checker looks for

  • Length: 200 characters on a free account, 300 with Premium, as LinkedIn Help states.
  • A reason to connect: a new role, a post, an event, a funding round or someone you both know.
  • Their name: “Hi there” or “Dear Sir” reads like a mass message.
  • Pitch words and links: “demo”, “quick call”, “our platform”, or a URL, in a note to a stranger.
  • Templates: lines like “I’d like to add you to my professional network”, and unfilled brackets or merge fields.
  • Ad language and shouting: the spam phrases our email spam checker flags, words in capitals and stacked exclamation marks.

A simple formula: reason, common ground, no ask

  1. Reason now: “congrats on the new Head of Sales role”, “your post on pipeline reviews”.
  2. Common ground: the problem you both work on, the customers you both serve, the event you both attended.
  3. No ask: end with “happy to connect”. Save the conversation for after they accept.

A free account gets only a few notes a month, so spend them on people with a real reason. For everyone else, a plain invitation and a good first message after they accept work better than a forced note. See how many invitations to plan for with the LinkedIn invitation limit calculator.

After they accept

  • Send one short message within a day or two that names why you reached out.
  • Ask one easy question instead of booking a call.
  • Keep it under LinkedIn’s message limits with the LinkedIn character counter.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

How long can a LinkedIn connection note be?

LinkedIn Help gives 200 characters on a free account and 300 with Premium.

How many connection notes can a free account send?

Only a few a month. LinkedIn’s newest help page says a free account can add a note to up to three invitations a month; older LinkedIn pages say five. Premium members can add a note to every invitation.

What should a connection note say?

LinkedIn suggests keeping it short and specific: how you found the person or what you have in common, why you want to connect now, and a polite tone. A recent event in their world, such as a new role or a post they wrote, is the easiest reason to give.

Why does the checker flag pitch words and links?

An invitation from a stranger that asks for a call or carries a link reads like an ad. LinkedIn recommends sending fewer, more thoughtful invitations; connect first, then send one short message once they accept.

Is my note stored?

No. The checker runs entirely in your browser; your note is never sent to Looply or anyone else.
